Koei Tecmo surprised fans at the PlayStation State of Play by announcing Dead or Alive 6 Last Round for PS5 this summer alongside a brand new game in development for the platform.
Fighting game fans have reason to celebrate following Koei Tecmo's surprise appearance at the latest PlayStation State of Play presentation. Series producer Yosuke Hayashi took the stage to announce that the franchise is officially coming out of dormancy, nearly seven years after the community last saw a major franchise update. The headline news includes both a modernized release for current generation hardware and the confirmation that an entirely new title is currently in development for the PlayStation 5.
First up is Dead or Alive 6 Last Round, slated to launch this summer as the definitive version of the 2019 fighter. According to details shared via Eurogamer, the upcoming release brings the title natively to the PlayStation 5 while bundling in previously released DLC characters and teasing additional fighters and costumes down the line. Koei Tecmo has also confirmed plans for a free to play version at launch, though specific details on how the free tier will operate and compare to the full package remain under wraps for now.
The bigger hook for long time followers, however, was the brief teaser that followed the Last Round announcement. Flashing the message that a new chapter awaits, the short clip confirmed that a brand new entry is in the works at the studio. While details are scarce and we do not yet know if the project will be numbered as a direct sequel or take the form of a soft reboot, the return of Koei Tecmo's signature fighting franchise is a welcome development for players who appreciate deep mechanics and active community competition.
