Behaviour Interactive is taking on Helldivers 2 with Exterminauts, a new cooperative third-person shooter where players act as expendable corporate contractors fighting hordes of alien wildlife.
Ever since Helldivers 2 launched to massive success in 2024, the industry has been waiting to see which studio would step up with a worthy challenger. According to a recent report from Polygon following a hands-on session at Gamescom, that challenger is coming from Behaviour Interactive, the team behind Dead by Daylight. Their upcoming cooperative shooter, Exterminauts, takes the chaotic squad-based formula popularized by Super Earth and applies its own distinct corporate satire to the mix.
Instead of fighting for planetary freedom, players in Exterminauts step into the boots of disposable corporate contractors. You are part exterminator and part repairman, sent down to the planet Tian to harvest a lucrative resource known as polymorphic plasma while local fauna fights back in droves. Early previews highlight familiar third-person action mixed with inventive loadouts, including black hole grenades and high-risk plasma weapons that can backfire if you push them past their limits.
While the DNA of Helldivers 2 is clearly visible, Behaviour Interactive is aiming to carve out its own identity through frantic, controlled chaos. The game is currently heading to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X without a confirmed release date yet. For a community that thrives on cooperative social play and intense PvE loops, this is easily one of the most exciting announcements of the year.
