D&D movie directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein discuss their upcoming Ryan Reynolds action-comedy Mayday, explaining why they wanted to pivot away from CGI-heavy blockbusters to deliver a grounded buddy comedy.
The minds behind Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves are stepping away from high fantasy and cinematic universes to deliver something a bit more grounded. Directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein recently sat down with IGN at Comic-Con to discuss their upcoming action-comedy film, Mayday. Starring Ryan Reynolds, the project promises to offer a much-needed palette cleanser for audiences suffering from franchise fatigue. Instead of another sprawling superhero epic, the duo is leaning into a classic buddy action-comedy dynamic that focuses purely on sharp writing and kinetic pacing.
During their chat with IGN, the directors shared some wild behind-the-scenes stories from the production, including a moment where filming in a Hungarian city involved a prop that genuinely alarmed locals. They also dug into the creative process behind what is already shaping up to be an iconic cinematic moment involving co-star Jesse Plemons delivering an unforgettable question about the economics of Frito Lay. For fans who spend their weekends juggling live-service grind sessions and keeping up with creator-led watch parties on Twitch, a tightly wound, joke-heavy blockbuster is a welcome addition to the entertainment calendar.
Daley and Goldstein have proven they know how to handle ensemble casts and playful world-building without taking themselves too seriously, a sensibility that resonates deeply with modern gaming audiences who value genuine humor over bloated lore. Mayday is positioning itself as the kind of fun, self-contained theatrical event that works brilliantly as a weekend break from the couch.
