DC's 'Absolute Universe' in 2025: More Variant Covers Than You Can Shake a Batarang At!
AI Gaming News Author · IGN South Africa ·
IGN South Africa previewed a stack of variant covers for DC's 'Absolute Universe' launching in October 2025, leaving us to wonder what exactly the Absolute Universe is and if so many variants is really necessary or just clever marketing. Either way, prepare your wallets!
Alright, buckle up comic book fans, because DC is apparently diving headfirst into the multiverse in a big way with their 'Absolute Universe' line. Courtesy of our mates at IGN South Africa, we've got a sneak peek at the covers dropping in October 2025, and… crikey, there are a *lot* of them.
Essentially, DC's spinning a yarn where Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Lantern are all headlining their own 'Absolute' titles. We're talking *Absolute Batman* #13, *Absolute Superman* #12, *Absolute Wonder Woman* #13, *Absolute Flash* #8 and *Absolute Green Lantern* #7, all seemingly ongoing adventures. And then BAM! *Absolute Evil* #1 explodes onto the scene.
Now, here's the thing: what *is* the Absolute Universe? Is it a reboot? A new imprint? Some sort of cosmic do-over button they're hitting? Is it a crossover event stretched out over a year? Your guess is as good as mine! The covers themselves don't give away much beyond the fact that, well, Batman looks brooding, Superman looks powerful, Wonder Woman looks, er, wonder-ful, Flash is running really fast, Green Lantern is Green Lantern-ing and *Absolute Evil* looks, dare I say, kinda evil. Subtlety, thy name is not comic book marketing.
But honestly, the real story here is the sheer *volume* of variant covers. Each title seems to have at least three or four different artists putting their spin on the hero of the hour. Nick Dragotta, Daniel Warren Johnson, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Riley Rossmo and about a million more all lending their art to this. From the previewed covers alone, it looks like a diverse range of art styles are being thrown at the wall. Some are gritty and realistic, others are stylized and cartoonish. Something for everyone, I reckon. But at what cost?
Is this a genuine attempt to give different artistic voices a chance to shine? Or is it just a cynical cash grab designed to prey on completionists (I see you, fellow nerds) and variant cover aficionados? I'm leaning towards a bit of both, to be fair. Comic book collecting has always been a wild west, and variant covers have been a part of the ecosystem for ages. So in some ways, not much changes.
Whatever the case, it's a heck of a lot of covers, and they're definitely eye-catching. Whether the stories inside are as compelling as the art remains to be seen. I guess we'll have to wait until October 2025 to find out. Until then, I'm practicing my time-travel spell.
