DC Studios just released a brand new trailer for Clayface, and it leans heavily into the character's horrifying body horror roots. According to reporting from IGN South Africa, the footage gives us our clearest look yet at the upcoming film in James Gunn's expanding DC Universe, centering on the tragic origin story of Matt Hagen. After undergoing a brutal experimental treatment for severe disfigurement, Hagen transforms into the shapeshifting antagonist, and the practical effects and visual design on display are wonderfully grotesque.
For anyone following the broader entertainment landscape where comic book adaptations regularly cross paths with gaming and pop culture discussions, this tone marks a distinct pivot. James Gunn and his team are clearly leaning into hard-edged, visually striking concepts that separate this new slate from standard superhero fare. The visceral nature of the trailer has already sparked plenty of conversations across streaming and social platforms, with fans dissecting every frame for lore connections and tonal hints.
While we will have to wait and see how this gritty cinematic vision translates to the screen, it is refreshing to see a comic book project commit so fully to its horror elements. Just remember to finish your lunch before you hit play on this one. You can check out the original report and watch the trailer over at IGN South Africa.
