Darkest Dungeon Developers Step Up With Project Files Following Mythic Games Liquidation

Red Hook Studios is giving Darkest Dungeon board game backers access to digital project files and 3D models following the liquidation of publisher Mythic Games.

Crowdfunding carries inherent risks, but watching a heavily backed project collapse is always a frustrating experience for the community. Following the compulsory liquidation of Mythic Games, the studio behind the Darkest Dungeon board game adaptation has stepped in to offer affected backers a measure of closure. Red Hook Studios recently announced that Mythic Games can no longer manufacture or deliver outstanding physical orders, officially bringing an end to the turbulent production saga. The original Kickstarter campaign, launched back in October 2021, pulled in nearly 5.7 million dollars from almost 29,000 backers who were eager to bring the grueling dungeon crawler to their tabletops.

While Red Hook did not directly handle the manufacturing process and lacked the operational funds to rescue physical production without endangering their own studio, they found a practical way to help. After being approached by a former Mythic employee, Red Hook granted immediate permission for their copyrighted materials to be used in a community-focused release. Backers are now receiving emails containing direct links to download all essential project files, including rulebooks, 3D printing models, and digital assets for personal, non-commercial use.

This kind of digital rescue gesture highlights a growing trend of developers stepping up when third-party manufacturing partners fail. Digital ownership and asset sharing cannot entirely replace the tactile satisfaction of opening a premium box filled with miniatures, but it empowers the community to find alternative ways to play. Backers looking for their files should check their inbox and spam folders for communications originating from the designated rescue email address.
