Dark Souls 2 Seamless Co-Op Mod Nears Alpha Testing After Engine Hurdles

Modder Yui is nearing alpha testing for a seamless co-op mod for Dark Souls 2, overcoming major engine hurdles during a year of complex development.
Modder Yui is finally closing in on the alpha testing phase for their highly anticipated seamless co-op mod for Dark Souls 2. Known for crafting similar multiplayer overhauls for Elden Ring, Nightreign, and the original Dark Souls, Yui revealed in a recent YouTube update and blog post that tackling this specific entry proved to be far more difficult than expected. Originally teased in April 2025, the project quickly escalated into one of the creator's most complicated and ambitious undertakings to date, requiring more than a year of intense reverse engineering.
The core challenge stems from the architecture of the game itself. While titles like Dark Souls 3, Sekiro, and Elden Ring share a cohesive engine lineage that makes modding somewhat standardized, Dark Souls 2 operates on a heavily modified and distinct branch. For reverse engineering purposes, Yui noted that it functions essentially as an entirely separate game. Because of these technical hurdles, the upcoming mod will exclusively support the 64-bit Scholar of the First Sin edition rather than the original 32-bit release.
Once alpha testing officially begins, players can expect support for up to six-player co-op sessions to tackle Drangleic together without traditional summoning barriers. While the test build will eventually be free to access, initial bug reporting and direct community support channels will roll out first for Yui's Patreon backers. As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, an exact date for the alpha launch remains unannounced, but the project is finally on the horizon. Read the full details over at Rock Paper Shotgun.
