Turns out Danny Elfman, the musical mastermind behind *The Simpsons* theme, never thought anyone would hear it! Now, he's lending his talents to a new animated series called *Bullet Time*, proving he's still got a soft spot for passion projects.
Right, so Danny Elfman, the bloke who's scored everything from *Batman* to *Beetlejuice* and even the *Fable* games, apparently thought his most famous tune – the one for *The Simpsons* – would just gather dust on a shelf. Can you believe it?
In an exclusive chat with IGN South Africa (cheers for the heads-up, mates!), Elfman confessed he never reckoned *The Simpsons* would blow up the way it did. "I did that purely for the pleasure and never expected anybody to see it," he said. "So obviously that wasn't the case, but you never know.” Fair dinkum, Danny, we’re all glad it did!
But what's got Elfman all chatty? Well, it's his new project, *Bullet Time*, an animated series from Eddie Alcazar (think *Beavis and Butthead* but dialed up to eleven with video games instead of music videos). Elfman's doing the score, and it's got that same "doing it for the love of it" vibe that drew him to *The Simpsons* back in the day.
“I met Eddie and liked him and he sent me this. Every year I try to do a couple of projects that are for love rather than money, and sometimes they pay off in unexpected ways,” Elfman explained. “The style was great. The industry has been good to me and provided me with a really good living for four decades. About 20 or 25 years ago, I felt like I had to start giving back a little bit. And so I'd start looking for little things or a documentary or a short project or a strange little film that has a $12 budget. And often those are the most fun things I'll do that year. And so it was just kind of like, yeah, this will just be for the pleasure rather than for the commercial aspect.” (Bless his cotton socks!)
