Cyberpunk 2 Creative Director Dismisses Calls to Extend Act 1

Cyberpunk 2 creative director Igor Sarzynski defends the pacing of Cyberpunk 2077, arguing that extending Act 1 would not have improved the game.

Ever since Cyberpunk 2077 launched back in 2020, players have debated the pacing of its opening hours. Act 1 sets up V and Jackie Welles trying to make it big in Night City, leading up to the disastrous heist that changes everything. Many fans have argued that the game would have benefited from an extended Act 1, giving players more time to bond with Jackie before his heartbreaking departure. However, the creative director for the upcoming sequel has a very different perspective on how the story needed to unfold.

Taking to social media, CD Projekt's Igor Sarzynski pushed back against the idea that lingering longer in the prologue would have improved the overall experience. To illustrate his point, he compared the narrative structure to a galaxy far, far away. According to Sarzynski, wanting a longer introduction in Night City is like saying we should spend more time on Tatooine with farmer Luke before he gets pulled into the wider Jedi conflict.

From a narrative design standpoint, the argument makes sense. Act 1 serves as the catalyst for the entire journey, shocking players out of complacency and forcing V into a desperate race against time. While spending more time with beloved characters always sounds appealing on paper, pacing a massive open world RPG requires sharp narrative turns to keep the stakes high. As the team looks ahead to the sequel, known currently as Cyberpunk 2, these storytelling philosophies offer a clear look at how the developers approach player immersion and plot momentum.
