Cult Classic Indie Platformer Knytt Arrives on Steam and GOG as a Free Download

The 2006 indie cult classic platformer Knytt has received a modernized, free-to-play port on Steam and GOG, bringing native controller support and new modes to current hardware.

Marking two decades since its initial release, the foundational indie platformer Knytt has received a modern PC port courtesy of developer Bit Kid. Available now on Steam and GOG as a completely free download, the newly minted Knytt Classic brings the 2006 cult favorite to current hardware while addressing compatibility issues that plagued the original freeware version on modern 60Hz displays.

The updated release stays true to the minimalist design philosophy of original Swedish developer Nifflas, where players must master a fixed set of starting moves rather than unlocking new abilities over time. Alongside native controller support and improved visual presentation, the package includes an Ultra Tough mode and popular crossover mods inspired by games like Baba Is You and Environment Station Alpha, bringing over 1,500 screens of exploration for returning fans and newcomers alike.

While this fresh release breathes new life into a piece of indie history, both original creator Nifflas and port developer Bit Kid are actively working on new projects. Nifflas is currently developing Rhythm Doggo, while Bit Kid is crafting a retro-inspired Metroidvania titled Wolfhound, with both upcoming games already available to wishlist on Steam.
