The modern Steam re-release of 2006 classic Gunz: The Duel is facing heavy criticism from players over severe network issues, broken mechanics, and suspected undisclosed generative AI usage.
Gunz: The Duel has finally made its long-awaited return to Steam courtesy of publisher Masangsoft, bringing a wave of nostalgia for PC players who remember the genre-defining action title from 2006. Unfortunately, as reported by Eurogamer, the revival has hit some serious roadblocks. Players diving back into the fast-paced movement shooter have flooded user reviews and community hubs with complaints about broken in-game events, altered gameplay mechanics, and severe network instability that leaves matches plagued by massive latency spikes and NAT connection failures.
The technical headaches are only part of the backlash. Community members have also pointed toward the widespread presence of suspected generative AI assets utilized in the updated release, noting that the game lacks the required Steam disclosures for AI content. Frustration has compounded due to radio silence from the development team on Discord, alongside the expected wave of early-access cheaters rendering themselves invincible in lobbies.
Despite the rough launch and the chorus of disappointed fans calling out the rough UI and technical shortcomings, some players are just glad to see the classic back on modern storefronts. Masangsoft has already rolled out initial server maintenance to address the networking issues, leaving the community waiting to see if patch work can salvage the resurrection of a true PC gaming veteran.
