Crystal Dynamics has revealed that Tomb Raider: Catalyst takes place years after Tomb Raider: Underworld, featuring a seasoned Lara Croft while keeping the Survivor trilogy as her origin story.
The development team behind the upcoming Tomb Raider: Catalyst has clarified where the adventure fits within the broader history of the franchise. Speaking to GamesRadar+ and reported by Eurogamer, game director Will Kerslake confirmed that Catalyst will take place years after the events of 2008 title Tomb Raider: Underworld. This placement means players will step into the boots of a fully realized, globe-trotting explorer who has already lived through decades of archaeological danger.
At the same time, the studio has emphasized that the recently concluded Survivor reboot trilogy remains canonical as Lara Croft's definitive origin story. This narrative bridge allows the team to present a seasoned protagonist without erasing her formative years in Siberia and South America. Furthermore, developers have assured both long-time fans and newcomers that Catalyst is designed as a standalone chapter, meaning no deep historical homework is required to follow the plot as Lara heads to Northern India.
The upcoming release schedule is also bringing a changing of the guard for the franchise. Actress Camilla Luddington recently confirmed she is stepping away from the role after ten years with the Survivor trilogy, passing the iconic bow and arrows to Alix Wilton Regan. Alongside Catalyst slated for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC in 2027, players can also look forward to the Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis remake arriving next year.
