Crystal Dynamics Announces Ground-Up Tomb Raider Remake Titled Legacy of Atlantis

Crystal Dynamics announced Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis at The Game Awards, a ground-up Unreal Engine 5 remake of the 1996 original set for a 2026 release.

Crystal Dynamics has officially revealed a ground-up remake of the 1996 genre defining classic, titled Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Announced at The Game Awards and originally detailed in a leak earlier in the day, the project aims to retell Lara Croft's initial hunt for the scattered pieces of the Scion artifact. Players will revisit iconic locations spanning Peru, Greece, Egypt, and a mysterious Mediterranean island, all rebuilt from scratch for modern hardware.

Built using Unreal Engine 5, the upcoming release bridges the gap between classic design and modern blockbuster sensibilities. Early trailers showcase a cinematic presentation style reminiscent of modern action adventures, while Lara herself sports a hybrid look combining her classic 1996 outfit with the jade necklace introduced in the 2013 reboot. Crystal Dynamics promises updated traversal mechanics and modern puzzles alongside new surprises for both veteran fans and newcomers.

Legacy of Atlantis is currently scheduled for a 2026 launch across current generation platforms, including PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and the rumored Nintendo Switch successor. Alongside this remake, the studio is continuing development on the next mainline series entry, currently known as Catalyst, in partnership with Amazon.
