Crystal Dynamics and Amazon Reveal Two New Tomb Raider Projects

Crystal Dynamics and Amazon announced two new Tomb Raider projects at The Game Awards: a 2026 remake titled Legacy of Atlantis and a brand new Unreal Engine 5 sequel titled Tomb Raider: Catalyst arriving in 2027.

Lara Croft is officially staging a major return to the gaming spotlight. During The Game Awards, developer Crystal Dynamics and publisher Amazon revealed a double dose of franchise news. Fans are getting both an entirely new adventure and a full remake of the title that started it all back in 1996. For players who have followed the survivor era as well as the classic era, these announcements represent a massive win for franchise continuity.

The first of the two releases is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, scheduled to drop in 2026. This project is a complete remake of the original game, bringing modern visual fidelity to classic moments like gunning down dinosaurs in ancient ruins. Following that in 2027 will be Tomb Raider: Catalyst, built in Unreal Engine 5. According to the studio, Catalyst will feature the largest world in franchise history and aims to blend the timelines of the classic games with the recent survivor trilogy, giving Lara a refreshed design that honors her entire history.

This new chapter marks a fresh era for the IP following its acquisition by Amazon and the conclusion of the previous trilogy published by Square Enix. Beyond games, the sprawling franchise continues to expand across media, including a Netflix animated series and an upcoming live-action adaptation. For the community, this multi-platform push means Lara Croft is once again cementing her status as an essential pillar of modern gaming culture. Original reporting by Patricia Hernandez on Polygon.
