Crusader Kings Developer Paradox Announces Afterworld, a Post-Apocalyptic Grand Strategy Game

Paradox Interactive has announced Afterworld, a post-apocalyptic grand strategy game set in a procedurally generated North America where players guide wasteland tribes through survival, politics, and conquest.

Paradox Interactive is finally breaking away from history after a decade, officially revealing Afterworld at Gamescom. According to Rock Paper Shotgun, the studio behind Crusader Kings 3 and Hearts of Iron IV is turning its grand strategy expertise toward a post-apocalyptic North America. Rather than leaning into the upbeat retrofuturism of Fallout, Afterworld adopts a grittier survival tone closer to Frostpunk, tasking players with leading wandering wasteland tribes through a procedurally generated map filled with tough moral choices and logistical nightmares.

The game gives players deep customization over their faction through starting origins, prologues, and formative traumas that shape initial resources and priorities. You can guide anything from displaced shelter dwellers who turned to cannibalism to roving biker gangs, all while managing scarce food, water, and fuel. As your tribe roams through the fog of war, you will research new technologies, define social laws, and establish religious philosophies that inevitably clash with rival factions across the wasteland.

Beyond managing internal politics and named characters with distinct stats, players will need to navigate diplomacy and trade with other tribes holding entirely different mythologies and values. While the ultimate endgame goal is to unite the fractured continent into a new American empire, the simulation depth promises plenty of room for emergent stories. Paradox has confirmed that Afterworld will feature both co-op and PvP modes, though a firm release date is still under wraps beyond a general coming soon window.
