Crusader Kings 3 is making its most popular playstyle free for everyone

Paradox Interactive is moving Crusader Kings 3's popular landless adventurer mechanic from the Roads to Power expansion into the base game for free later this year.

Paradox Interactive is making a major shift for Crusader Kings 3 later this year by moving the landless adventurer mechanic into the base game for all players. Originally locked behind the Roads to Power expansion released in 2024, the roaming mercenary lifestyle lets players skip the traditional throne room experience and instead travel the map as an unlanded band of adventurers doing odd jobs, building influence, and plotting a hostile takeover from the bottom up.

According to a recent developer diary by game director Alexander Oltner, the team completely underestimated how popular this rags-to-riches player fantasy would become. The studio originally designed the feature as a brief transition state for deposed rulers or characters between landed lives. Instead, starting a campaign as a custom landless adventurer has become the single most popular way to play the strategy game by a wide margin.

The feature will become permanently free alongside the launch of the merchant-focused Silk and Silver expansion in the final months of the year. While some specialized contracts will remain tied to the original expansion, freeing the core mechanic from DLC constraints means the development team can dedicate significantly more time and resources to expanding the adventurer playstyle in future updates. It is a massive win for community accessibility, letting any strategy fan carve out an empire from humble, muddy beginnings without needing to buy a bundle of add-ons first. As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, this change clears the path for deeper updates to unlanded gameplay moving forward.
