Paradox Interactive has revealed Chapter 5 for Crusader Kings 3, bringing playable popes, religious overhauls, and merchant republics to the grand strategy game through two major expansions.
Paradox Interactive has pulled back the curtain on the fifth chapter of add-ons for Crusader Kings 3, and the upcoming slate gives players a choice between divine authority and pure capitalism. As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, the upcoming expansion pass includes two major expansions titled By God Alone and Silk and Silver, alongside a couple of smaller cosmetic and audio packs that are already available. For a grand strategy game that has always thrived on intricate player stories and emergent political chaos, these additions open up entirely new avenues for roleplay and power grabbing across PC and console platforms.
First up is By God Alone, scheduled to launch between July and September of this year. This expansion completely overhauls the religious mechanics of the game with a primary focus on the Christian faith, finally allowing players to step into the shoes of the Pope himself. Along with managing monastic orders and holy sites, the update introduces a Spiritual Fulfillment system where a character's sins and virtues directly impact their standing and stress levels. Secular rulers are not left out either, gaining the ability to puppet clerical characters to pull strings behind the scenes of church politics.
Following that in the final quarter of the year, Silk and Silver shifts the focus from feudal warfare to medieval commerce by introducing playable merchant republics. Players can helm wealthy families running trading companies, setting up constitutions, and competing for lucrative trade routes and monopolies. It leans heavily into economic dominance rather than land ownership. For players looking to jump in immediately, the Chapter V bundle is available now, or you can access the content via the DLC subscription service that Paradox introduced last year, alongside the release of the free 1.19 game update.
