Crunchyroll has acquired The Wolf, a new French animated thriller from Snowpiercer creator Jean-Marc Rochette, highlighting the streaming platform's push to expand its catalog with international adult animation.
Crunchyroll is continuing to broaden its horizons beyond traditional Japanese anime by picking up distribution rights for The Wolf, an upcoming French animated feature film. Originally reported by Polygon, the project stems from the creative mind of Jean-Marc Rochette, best known as the creator of the post-apocalyptic classic Snowpiercer. Directed and co-written by Benjamin Massoubre and Fursy Tessier, who previously collaborated on the acclaimed horror film I Lost My Body, the movie promises a darker and more mature narrative experience for streaming audiences.
The story centers on a solitary shepherd named Gaspard who lives in the Alps and is haunted by the tragic loss of his son. When a wandering wolf begins threatening his flock, Gaspard embarks on a harsh quest for vengeance that forces him to confront his own deep-seated guilt. Animation is being handled by the French studio Xilam Films, which is utilizing a striking blend of traditional hand-drawn techniques and 3D rendering to achieve a distinct, near live-action aesthetic that sets it apart from standard platform fare.
For streaming enthusiasts, this acquisition highlights a broader shift in how platforms curate content for modern viewers. As competitors like Netflix and Prime Video continue pushing heavy investments into adult animation and anime libraries, Crunchyroll is countering by bringing international, prestige animation projects into its ecosystem. It is a smart move that gives global creators a dedicated home while offering subscribers a richer variety of mature animated storytelling.
