A look at the best scenic driving routes across the Forza Horizon series, highlighting how Playground Games turns virtual maps into prime digital tourism and leisure spaces for modern players.
For years, Playground Games has treated virtual drivers to some of the most meticulously crafted digital tourism in the industry. As explored in a recent feature by Oli Welsh over at Polygon, the Forza Horizon series excels at turning real-world destinations into dense, highly playable wonderlands. From the sun-baked expanses of early titles to the much-anticipated recreation of Japan in Forza Horizon 6, these open worlds function as prime social spaces and digital road trip destinations for players who just want to unwind away from the standard race lobby.
While racing titles often focus purely on podium finishes and meta vehicle stats, the Horizon formula shines brightest when you slow down and treat it as an interactive sightseeing tour. Cruising in a lower-class cruiser with the soundtrack turned up offers a completely different kind of entertainment lifeline. It is a chance to decompress after a long session in competitive multiplayer queues or battle pass grinds, proving that virtual ownership of digital garages can be just as rewarding for leisurely exploration as it is for high-speed thrills.
Licensing realities mean that older entries in the franchise have slowly vanished from digital storefronts, but backward compatibility on modern hardware keeps these digital landscapes accessible for anyone holding onto physical discs or library licenses. Whether you are carving through the red-rock canyons of the original Colorado map or exploring the neon-lit mountain passes of the latest release, taking a scenic detour remains one of the best ways to experience modern open-world design. Head over to Polygon to read the full breakdown of specific routes and recommended cars for your next virtual getaway.
