Critical Role has launched Age of Umbra: Sallowlands, a gothic Daggerheart miniseries featuring an all-star cast including Laura Bailey, Jennifer English, and Abubakar Salim navigating a dark fantasy world.
Critical Role is expanding its TTRPG universe with Age of Umbra: Sallowlands, a gothic miniseries using the Daggerheart system that leans hard into dark, Elden Ring inspired aesthetics. Set within the grim, godless Halcyon Domain, the show shifts away from traditional high fantasy and into a despair-ridden landscape where an ethereal corruption known as the Umbra blights everything it touches. For a community that treats actual play shows as prime communal viewing events on Twitch and YouTube, this tonal pivot offers a fresh flavor of storytelling.
The cast brings together an incredible lineup of talent from across the gaming and entertainment space, including Critical Role co-founder Laura Bailey alongside industry heavyweights like Jennifer English and Abubakar Salim. Bailey steps into the role of Sister, a foreboding Fungril hedge witch searching for a cure to magical decay, while Salim plays Mercy, a towering Giant-Fungril Juggernaut with a penchant for punching first and a mysterious amnesiac past. English rounds out the initial party as a Beastbound Ranger, adding even more narrative weight to a group that is equal parts terrifying and deeply tragic.
Beyond just another campaign to follow, Sallowlands highlights how TTRPG actual plays continue to evolve as major entertainment pillars that rival traditional prestige television. The detailed character builds and heavy dramatic stakes show why millions of viewers tune in week after week. As the party treks deeper into the salt-caked Sallowlands in search of a rumored city of beauty, the community is already dissecting every piece of lore and character connection.
