Creature Corps Gives Monster Battling Games a Dark, Subversive Twist

Creature Corps is a new Image Comics series that deconstructs classic monster battling games like Pokémon with a dark, satirical twist involving time-displaced creatures and exploitative leagues.
Writer Curt Pires is teaming up with artist Jok once again for an upcoming Image Comics series that puts a bleak, satirical spin on creature collection. Originally highlighted in an exclusive preview by IGN South Africa, Creature Corps drops readers into a reality where bizarre survivalist monsters from a broken future bleed into the present day. Instead of peaceful exploration and gym badges, these time displaced creatures are exploited in a high stakes, incredibly profitable combat league managed by teenage trainers.
The story centers on Dusty Gotem, a former prodigy who became World Champion at age fourteen before walking away in disgust following a tragedy. Years later, mounting medical bills for his mother force Gotem back into the brutal industry he left behind. Pires describes the project as a chaotic mashup of sixteen bit gaming nostalgia, the cynical deconstructionism of The Boys, and time travel pandemonium, noting that the team is even launching a companion trading card game alongside the books.
Image Comics is launching the series with a massive sixty page first issue priced at four dollars and ninety nine cents. For anyone who grew up spending hundreds of hours catching and trading digital monsters on handheld screens, this violent take on the genre offers an intriguing parallel to the games we know. Creature Corps #1 hits comic shops on December 2, with final orders due by November 9.
