Could Dropping PlayStation Discs Actually Mean Lower PS Store Prices?

A former Square Enix executive argues that Sony's shift to a fully digital PlayStation ecosystem could lead to cheaper games and frequent sales driven by publisher competition. However, players remain concerned about the loss of physical ownership and trade-in options.

The gaming community continues to process Sony's controversial move to phase out physical media entirely by January 2028, but at least one industry insider sees a potential silver lining for digital shoppers. Jacob Navok, former Square Enix director of business development and current Genvid CEO, recently shared his perspective on social media regarding how a fully digital ecosystem might impact pricing on the PlayStation Store. According to original reporting by Vikki Blake over at Eurogamer, Navok argues that digital game prices are ultimately driven by publisher competition rather than storefront rivalry.

He points out that platform competition, like the ongoing rivalry between Steam and the Epic Games Store, primarily affects revenue splits for developers rather than direct discounts for players. Instead, prices drop when games compete against one another on the exact same storefront, citing the gradual price reductions of Final Fantasy 16 on Steam as a prime example of publishers adjusting rates to stay competitive in a crowded digital space. Navok suggests that transitioning the PlayStation ecosystem to a fully digital storefront will accelerate this trend, leading to more frequent sales and dynamic pricing models similar to what PC players experience daily.

Of course, this theoretical economic upside does little to soothe immediate community concerns surrounding digital ownership rights, the preservation of physical media, and the loss of trade-in markets. Sony is clearly pushing forward with the transition regardless, even updating notices on disc-equipped PS5 consoles to remind buyers about the upcoming 2028 cutoff. For cross-platform players accustomed to digital libraries, battle passes, and cloud-based gaming, cheaper storefront sales might soften the blow, but the debate over trading physical ownership for digital convenience is far from settled.
