Polygon's hands-off preview of Control Resonant reveals an action-RPG sequel that swaps claustrophobic corridors for a zone-based Manhattan, featuring fast-paced combat inspired by Devil May Cry and deep character build options.
Remedy Entertainment is shifting gears for its upcoming sequel, moving away from the isolated corridors of the Oldest House and into a twisted, zone-based Manhattan. In a recent hands-off preview covered by Polygon, the studio showcased how Control Resonant leans heavily into character action territory, drawing visual and mechanical comparisons to Devil May Cry, Infamous, and Gravity Rush. Stepping into the shoes of new protagonist Dylan Faden, players will experience a much faster and more fluid combat loop supported by a deep action-RPG progression system. Creative director Mikael Kasurinen noted that the team is also addressing past community pain points, promising a much more intuitive in-game 3D map this time around.
Progression in Control Resonant is built around three core pillars, which include combat abilities, weapon upgrades, and talents. Players will earn meaningful upgrades by defeating Resonants, who are former persons of power transformed by the mysterious Pattern altering the world. These encounters function similarly to classic boss rewards, offering choices that let players tailor Dylan to their preferred playstyle. Alongside the action, Dylan will interact with surviving New Yorkers, including returning faces like Simon Arish and a new handler named Zoe De Vera, via an unobtrusive dialogue system designed to keep the narrative moving smoothly without pulling players out of the flow.
For a community that loves deep builds, distinct progression loops, and strong narrative framing, Control Resonant is shaping up to be a compelling evolution for the franchise. By opening up the world into distinct exploration zones while keeping the signature weirdness of the Federal Bureau of Control intact, Remedy is delivering the kind of ambitious single-player experience that modern cross-platform gamers crave. We can expect to see much more of Dylan and the altered streets of New York ahead of the game's release later this year. Be sure to check out the full preview on Polygon for a closer look at the gameplay mechanics.
