Combolands Blends Cities Skylines Strategy With Balatro Combo Chains

Combolands: Roguelike Citybuilder merges the addictive combo mechanics of Balatro with the spatial strategy of city builders, offering an absorbing new demo ahead of its August release.

The gaming community has spent a lot of time searching for the next big indie obsession following the massive success of Balatro. Many developers tried to replicate that formula, but few managed to capture the right balance of strategy and pure satisfaction. Developer Crux Games is stepping up with a fresh take in Combolands: Roguelike Citybuilder, which combines the addictive combo mechanics of a card roguelike with the grid layout puzzle of a city builder like Cities: Skylines. Based on the currently available Steam demo, the game offers a uniquely absorbing loop that respects your time while demanding careful planning.

In Combolands, you start each run on a procedurally generated island with a strict eight-week timer to hit your population milestones. Each action takes one week, and you have limited rerolls to shuffle your hand of buildings. Early turns are straightforward, requiring you to place hunter huts in forests or apiaries near flowers to generate basic resources and boost your population. However, the complexity scales quickly as you encounter higher tiers. You have to navigate placement rules for advanced structures like railroads or stone walls that only activate when fully enclosed.

The game relies heavily on adjacency bonuses and clever spatial puzzles. Clear away too many trees early for quick resources, and your hunter huts will starve later on. Luckily, you have a few tools to salvage a bad run, including demolition options and a one-time bonus of three extra turns. When runs inevitably end in failure, the roguelike progression kicks in. You can select specific guilds to weight your building pools for the next run, and an in-game shop lets you spend gold on powerful modifiers that completely shift your strategy. Crux Games plans to feature seven different guilds at launch, opening up plenty of room for creative builds. Josh Broadwell detailed these promising mechanics in a recent preview over at Polygon. The full version of Combolands launches on August 24 for Windows PC via Steam, giving players just enough time to test out the demo and prep their city planning strategies.
