Taito and Clear River Games are bringing the classic SNES role-playing duology Lufia 1 and 2 to modern consoles and PC in 2027.
The early 1990s remain legendary for laying down the blueprint for modern role-playing games, but tracking down some of those 16-bit gems today can feel like an impossible quest. Developer Taito is teaming up with publisher Clear River Games to bring Lufia 1 and 2 back to modern platforms. Titled Lufia 1 & 2: The Sinistrals Saga, the new collection is scheduled to launch digitally and physically for Windows PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5 in 2027.
While the first game introduced players to the sweeping battle against the villainous Sinistrals, the sequel is widely remembered as the creative peak of the duology. Lufia 2 expanded on traditional turn-based mechanics by introducing environmental puzzle-solving items like grappling hooks and bombs, along with a capsule monster system that let players raise elemental companions. It even featured the Ancient Cave, an optional ninety-nine-floor procedurally generated dungeon that gave players a roguelike challenge long before the genre became an indie staple.
For players who grew up with modern platform accessibility and digital game libraries, tracking down expensive original cartridges was often the only way to experience these foundational titles. This upcoming release bridges that gap, giving both longtime fans and newer players an accessible way to experience a vital piece of JRPG history without needing vintage hardware.
