Recent leaks suggest that Call of Duty: Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are heading to PS4 and PS5 as direct ports of their original PS3 versions.
Recent leaks indicate that classic installments in the blockbuster shooter franchise may soon make a comeback on current and previous generation Sony hardware. According to information shared by reliable tracking account PlayStation Game Size and corroborated by industry insider CharlieIntel, ports of both Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 are in the pipeline for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. The upcoming releases are reportedly structured as direct ports of the original PlayStation 3 versions rather than full remasters with overhauled assets.
For a franchise that currently dominates modern gaming through cross-platform live-service ecosystems, battle passes, and massive battle royale integration, the return of these legacy titles offers a fascinating look back at earlier era design. While details remain scarce and a definitive release window has not been announced, the technical rollout is expected to feature a native PlayStation 4 application that utilizes backward compatibility to run on the PlayStation 5. Players should temper expectations regarding modern graphical overhauls, but the move still provides a welcome avenue for community members to revisit foundational chapters of the series.
Releasing older entries on accessible hardware highlights a growing industry trend toward library preservation and easier platform accessibility. As modern gaming continues to push forward with cloud streaming, mobile ecosystems, and high-end PC hardware, the ability to jump back into retro multiplayer maps and classic campaigns without digging out vintage consoles matters to longtime fans. We will keep an eye on official announcements from Activision as more details regarding pricing, exact release timing, and potential feature sets emerge.
