The System Shock 2 25th Anniversary Remaster is currently free to keep on the Epic Games Store until October 8, 2026, alongside the visual novel Buried Stars.
PC players have a strong reason to fire up the Epic Games Store this week because Nightdive Studios and IGN South Africa report that the System Shock 2 25th Anniversary Remaster is free to keep until October 8, 2026. Once you claim the title through your account, it remains permanently in your library for those marathon weekend sessions. Nightdive released this definitive version in June 2025 to update the 1999 sci-fi classic with modern creature comforts like 4K support at 144fps, overhauled character models, full mod integration, and cross-play co-op for up to four players.
Originally crafted by Looking Glass Studios and Irrational Games, the 1999 original laid the groundwork for immersive sims and directly influenced pillars like BioShock through its unmatched environmental storytelling and tense RPG mechanics. Waking from cryosleep on the doomed starship Von Braun remains a masterclass in atmospheric dread, and this remaster preserves that core identity while finally smoothing out the rough technical edges that kept modern players away.
Epic is sweetening the rotation this week by also offering the anime-style visual novel Buried Stars for free alongside System Shock 2 through the same October 8 cutoff. Grabbing these additions takes only a couple of clicks, giving your digital library an instant injection of survival horror and narrative depth without touching your wallet.
