Civilization 7 Continues Its Redemption Arc With Hotseat Multiplayer and Major Overhauls

Civilization 7 is receiving a major free update next week that adds hotseat multiplayer, overhauled government and happiness systems, and a new randomized map generator, alongside the first wave of paid DLC.

Nearly a year and a half after a rocky debut that left the community frustrated with UI hurdles and divisive design choices, Firaxis is pressing forward with another substantial update for Civilization 7. Set to launch during the week of June 22, the 1.4.1 update introduces hotseat multiplayer, fulfilling a long-standing community demand for local turn-based matches on a single device. Alongside local multiplayer, the update delivers a heavily randomized Archipelago map style powered by advanced generation tools, giving strategy fans fresh terrain to conquer.

Beyond map updates, Firaxis is targeting some of the core systemic complaints that have dogged the game since launch. The upcoming patch includes sweeping overhauls to the Government, Happiness, and Celebrations systems. Players will now encounter new happiness stages, reworked government passives, and the ability to unlock enduring Government Traditions that carry your strategic choices across multiple Ages. These changes reflect an ongoing effort to rebuild player trust following May's massive Test of Time update, which finally addressed complaints about locking players into specific civilizations across eras.

For players looking to expand their empires further, the studio is also rolling out the first half of the paid Brush & Blade content collection alongside the free patch. This initial drop centers on the histories of Korea and Japan, adding leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Heian Japan, and Sengoku Japan alongside new Wonders and profile items. As Matt Wales reported for Eurogamer, the second half of the collection will follow later this summer, bringing additional leaders and civilizations to round out the expansion.
