CD Projekt Red Puts The Witcher Remake on Hold to Prioritize The Witcher 4

CD Projekt Red has temporarily paused development on The Witcher Remake so the team can wait for assets and technical pipelines from The Witcher 4.

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that development on the highly anticipated remake of the original Witcher game is currently on the back burner. According to a statement given to GameSpot and reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, the studio is temporarily pausing heavy production on the remake because its progress is directly tied to the development of The Witcher 4. The team handling the remake, Fool's Theory, is instead directing its primary focus toward the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3 and providing support staff for the core sequel.

From a production standpoint, this strategy makes practical sense. Because the remake is designed to run on the foundation laid by The Witcher 4, developers need the upcoming flagship title to establish the necessary assets, tools, and technical pipelines first. Building a remake without those foundational elements in place would lead to redundant work. Even so, this update brings back familiar questions regarding studio transparency and early project announcements, especially since the remake was first revealed to the public back in 2022.

This scheduling shift comes during a busy period for the broader franchise. While the majority of CD Projekt Red's developers are currently split between The Witcher 4 and the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, the studio is also managing recent restructuring and looking to expand its team for the mysterious new intellectual property codenamed Project Hadar. For players eager to revisit the Continent, it means a longer wait for the remake, but it also signals that CD Projekt Red is betting big on getting its next generation of core RPGs right.
