CD Projekt Red warns that PlayStation 5 physical discs for The Witcher 4 depend entirely on Sony policies, but the studio promises a physical box with collectible items regardless.
As reported by Eurogamer, CD Projekt Red has admitted it has no control over whether The Witcher 4 will receive a physical PlayStation 5 disc when it launches in 2028. Speaking at Gamescom, joint-CEO MichaĆ Nowakowski explained that the studio is entirely at the mercy of Sony and its first party manufacturing policies. Because Sony plans to phase out disc manufacturing around that timeframe, the odds of a traditional console disc release are looking slim for the blockbuster RPG.
Despite the hardware limitations imposed by console manufacturers, CD Projekt Red remains committed to physical editions for collectors and community members who value tangible ownership. Nowakowski stressed that the studio loves physical collectibles and will definitely ship a game box packed with physical goodies, often referred to in the industry as feelies, regardless of whether a playable disc can actually fit inside.
This shift highlights the ongoing industry transition toward all digital ecosystems, a reality that console players and digital asset owners are navigating more frequently. While pure digital distribution dominates modern gaming platforms, physical boxes with unique collectibles still hold immense value for communities who want to display their favorite titles on a shelf.
In the meantime, CD Projekt Red has plenty on the horizon to keep players busy before 2028. The studio recently pointed to a 2028 release window for The Witcher 4, while fans can look forward to a massive gameplay remaster of The Witcher 3 arriving later this September alongside the brand new Songs of the Past expansion next year.
