Capcom Pulls Onimusha: Way of the Sword Release Date Forward to Dodge September Blockbuster Traffic

Capcom has moved Onimusha: Way of the Sword up from September 25 to September 4 to avoid a crowded late-month release window, while converting pre-order incentives into early adopter bonuses.

September is shaping up to be one of the most brutal months of the year for game launches, and developers are already scrambling for cover. According to a recent report by Rock Paper Shotgun, Capcom has decided to move the release date of Onimusha: Way of the Sword forward from September 25th to September 4th. Instead of going head to head with a massive wave of cosmic entities, psychological horrors, and heavy hitters dropping later in the month, the team opted to slide into early September where the battlefield is slightly less crowded.

While the shift still puts Onimusha near vampire RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker, it successfully dodges a punishing cluster of heavy releases that includes Control Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, and other high profile titles. To sweeten the deal for players making the jump, Capcom is adjusting its pre-order incentives. The original pre-order bonus items, featuring a Lion Dog charm and a Sealed Curse sword skin, are now transitioning into an early adopter bonus. Anyone who picks up the game on Steam or the Epic Games Store by September 25th will still be able to claim them, and players carrying save data from the game's demo will also secure the rewards.

Even with the new date, Onimusha: Way of the Sword still has to carve out space in a crowded feudal Japanese action genre alongside veterans like Nioh and Sekiro. Preview coverage has noted that Capcom's revival leans into its classic Resident Evil roots with a more deliberate, atmospheric pace. Whether that methodical approach can stand out against modern action heavyweights remains to be seen, but moving out of the late September crossfire is certainly a smart play for player mindshare.
