Capcom shares that Dragon's Dogma 2 and its Dark Arisen expansion are running at 30fps and higher on the Switch 2, driven by continuous optimizations to the RE Engine that will also boost performance on current gen consoles.
Porting massive open world RPGs to portable hardware is never an easy task, but Capcom is proving that Nintendo's upcoming console is more than capable of handling heavy hitters. According to a recent interview with Eurogamer by deputy editorial director Dom Peppiatt, Dragon's Dogma 2 and its upcoming Dark Arisen expansion are already running at a stable 30 frames per second and higher on the Switch 2. Given the heavy performance hurdles the game faced at launch across PC and current gen consoles back in 2024, seeing it run smoothly on a handheld platform marks a significant technical achievement for the studio.
The success behind this ambitious port comes down to the continuous evolution of Capcom's proprietary RE Engine. Producer Naoto Oyama explained that the studio has built a positive internal cycle of knowledge sharing, allowing optimization breakthroughs made for titles like Pragmata and Resident Evil Requiem to directly benefit other teams. Because engine improvements stack with each new release, the technical gains required to get Dragon's Dogma 2 running on Nintendo hardware are also feeding back into the broader ecosystem.
Players on traditional consoles are set to reap the rewards of this cross-platform optimization work as well. Capcom confirmed that a major title update slated for late August aims to push Performance Mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S to a solid 60 frames per second. As the studio continues to fine tune the core game ahead of the Dark Arisen expansion launch later this year, the mutual performance upgrades mean that players across every platform will get a much smoother experience.
