After being cancelled in early 2025, the Baltic Powers expansion for Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition has returned from the dead with a September 10 release date and an open beta running now, as reported by Rock Paper Shotgun.
Strategy fans have a major reason to celebrate as a previously shelved expansion makes an unexpected return. Developer World's Edge has officially resurrected the Baltic Powers DLC for Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition, targeting a September 10 release. Originally teased back in early 2024 before getting the cancellation axe in January 2025 due to premature announcements, the expansion is fully back on track and bringing substantial new content to the real time strategy staple.
The upcoming release introduces two distinct new civilizations to the game. The Danes focus on economic intelligence, naval control, and layered defense, while the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth acts as an agrarian powerhouse capable of channeling economic momentum into crushing cavalry charges. Players can also dive into fresh historical maps inspired by conflicts like the Livonian War, alongside new game modes such as Regicide and Independence. For those eager to test the content early, a free open beta is currently running on Steam until August 6.
This kind of reversal is rare in modern game development, where cancelled projects usually stay buried forever. It is a refreshing win for a dedicated community that kept asking for more content long after support seemed to wind down. As digital economies and post launch support models continue to shift across platforms, seeing a studio listen to player demand and deliver on a promised expansion is a great reminder of why active community feedback still matters.
