Call of Duty: WW2 on Game Pass? Blimey, It's More Popular Than You Think!

Call of Duty: WW2 is surprisingly popular on Xbox Game Pass, shooting up the charts despite its age. However, PC players are stuck dealing with a hacking infestation, which is a bloody shame.

Right, listen up, because this one's a bit of a head-scratcher. Call of Duty: WW2, a game that's old enough to almost drive (almost!), has become a stonking success on Xbox Game Pass.

According to Game Rant, the game's player count has exploded since its arrival on Microsoft's subscription service, leaping into the top 10 most-played games on Xbox. Yes, *that* WW2, released way back in 2017. It's currently rubbing shoulders with newer titles, including the upcoming Black Ops 6. Talk about a comeback, eh?

Now, before you PC players start getting any ideas, it's not all sunshine and roses. The PC version is apparently plagued by more hackers than a dodgy server farm. Players are even warning others to steer clear until Activision sorts out the mess (which, fingers crossed, they actually do).

But what's the deal with this sudden surge in popularity? Well, as TrueAchievements points out, the game jumped from 163rd to 9th most popular Xbox title. Is everyone suddenly craving some good ol' fashioned, boots-on-the-ground Call of Duty action? (Maybe all those futuristic shooters were a bit much, eh?)

Interestingly, it turns out Sledgehammer Games originally planned a battle royale mode for WW2 – way before Warzone became a thing. Footage even leaked. Can you imagine? WW2-era battle royale? Sounds like utter chaos, but also…kind of brilliant? It was scrapped, but eventually influenced Black Ops 4's Blackout mode, which then, of course, lead to Warzone. So you could say WW2's failed battle royale experiment changed the course of FPS history!

With Microsoft now owning Activision, and given the recent success of Call of Duty titles on Game Pass, it's a fair bet we'll see more classic entries joining the lineup. Which begs the question: what old-school COD title are you hoping to see next? Personally, I'm holding out for a remaster of the original Modern Warfare trilogy. Just imagine...

This all points to one clear truth: People really dig good game design and gameplay. The numbers don't lie - there is a lot of life left in the Call of Duty Franchise.
