Activision is ending support for Call of Duty: Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year, aligning with the launch of Modern Warfare 4 and the move to current-generation hardware.
The transition to current-generation hardware is hitting one of modern gaming's biggest live-service pillars. Alongside the reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Activision confirmed that Warzone will officially end support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year. This shift aligns with mainline entries finally moving past the hardware limitations of the previous generation, as Modern Warfare 4 targets current-gen consoles, PC, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. For players still dropping into the battle royale on older machines, the wind-down process begins imminently according to reporting by Polygon.
According to the official schedule outlined by the Call of Duty team, new downloads of Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One will stop on June 4. Existing players can continue matches until the first season of Modern Warfare 4 launches, though the in-game store on those platforms goes dark on June 25. Players will still be able to grind through free Battle Pass tiers and unlock new gear during the remainder of the current Black Ops 7 seasons. Once Modern Warfare 4 season 1 arrives, Warzone will fully integrate new seasonal progression as part of a connected cross-title experience exclusively on current-generation platforms.
This move marks another inevitable milestone in the hardware generation cycle. Live-service games eventually outgrow legacy architecture, and players investing heavily in digital economies and battle passes are feeling the pinch as developers focus entirely on the power of current-gen systems and newer platforms. While leaving last-gen behind is always a tough pill to swallow for communities on older hardware, it paves the way for deeper integration and more demanding technical features as the franchise looks toward its next chapter.
