Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Looks to Fix Its Biggest Movement Mistakes

Infinity Ward admits that movement in 2022's Modern Warfare 2 felt restrictive, confirming that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will introduce new mechanics like slide-mantling and supine sliding to restore player freedom ahead of its October release.
Infinity Ward is making some major course corrections for its next entry in the franchise. In a recent episode of the behind-the-scenes documentary series From the Ward, co-studio head Mark Grigsby openly acknowledged that the team missed the mark on player movement in 2022's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. By stripping away certain mechanics and player freedom, the studio earned plenty of justified criticism from a community that values fluid, responsive mechanics above all else. Grigsby noted that the team took that feedback to heart while designing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
To address those past frustrations, the developers are introducing several key mechanical upgrades. Co-studio head Jack O'Hara detailed additions like mantling straight out of a slide and the ability to slide directly into a supine position. Alongside a companion blog post teasing smoother climbing, hanging, and jumping mechanics, it is clear Infinity Ward is trying to find a better middle ground. While Modern Warfare entries have traditionally prioritized a more grounded feel compared to the frantic Omnimovement systems seen in recent Black Ops titles, bringing back a sense of agility is a massive win for the player base.
Players will not have to wait until launch to test these changes for themselves. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled to drop on October 23 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. True to form, Activision plans to host an open beta ahead of release, giving everyone a chance to see if these movement tweaks actually deliver before locking in a pre-order.
