Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is introducing Collateral, a new tactical game mode featuring a round-based cash economy, no health regeneration, and strict weapon purchases reminiscent of Counter-Strike.
Call of Duty is finally dipping its toes into the strict tactical shooter space. According to a recent report by Sherif Saed at Eurogamer, the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is introducing a brand new competitive mode called Collateral. While Search and Destroy has long served as the franchise's closest equivalent to bomb defusal shooters, Collateral takes things much further by adopting a round-based economy that strips away many traditional series mainstays.
In Collateral, custom loadouts are entirely disabled, and players begin each round with only a pistol and a specific amount of cash. Between rounds, players must buy their weapons, armor, and perks using money earned from objective work and kills, mirroring the core gameplay loop of Counter-Strike and Valorant. To cement this shift toward hardcore tactical play, developers are also removing automatic health regeneration, mid-round respawns, and standard killstreaks, meaning a single mistake can cost you your entire purchased arsenal.
This surprising reveal was tucked away in a PC features blog post, though the mode is expected to launch across all platforms alongside the game on October 23. It arrives alongside several player-friendly quality-of-life updates from Activision, including a toggle to hide silly cosmetic skins in Warzone and a long-overdue fix for double XP tokens. For competitive players who enjoy high-stakes round-based economies, Collateral might just be the exact reason to jump back into the franchise.
