Activision is officially bringing back early access for the single-player campaign with the upcoming launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. According to a recent report by Sherif Saed at Eurogamer, players who digitally pre-order any version of the game across available platforms will get to jump into the campaign up to a week before the official release date. For early adopters, this means the story mode kicks off on October 16, while the full game unlocks on October 23.
This early access window has historically served a practical purpose for the community. When Infinity Ward first introduced the concept with the 2019 Modern Warfare reboot, it gave the narrative side of the game a dedicated week in the spotlight without competing against the inevitable rush of multiplayer grinding. More importantly, achievement data historically shows that a vast majority of the player base skips the campaign entirely in favor of immediate multiplayer matches. Giving the story a separate window helps boost completion rates by letting players finish the narrative arc at their own pace before the server queues fill up on launch day.
Narratively, Modern Warfare 4 picks up the story threads left dangling after the events of Modern Warfare 3. This time around, the action shifts to the Korean Peninsula, focusing on a South Korean soldier dealing with a sudden invasion from the north, alongside appearances from returning fan-favorite characters like Captain Price and Ghost from Task Force 141. As the franchise expands its reach to platforms including the Nintendo Switch 2 alongside PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, this pre-order perk gives solo players a structured way to experience the blockbuster story before diving into the live-service ecosystem.
