PlayStation ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 sold over 11 million copies in less than a month, generating an estimated $435 million for Microsoft despite criticism over technical upgrades and legacy security issues.
Nostalgia remains one of the most powerful forces in gaming. According to recent estimates from Alinea Analytics shared by Eurogamer, the surprise PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 cleared a massive 11.2 million units combined in less than a month on shelves. Black Ops 2 led the charge with a commanding 8.2 million copies sold, while the original game pulled in a respectable 3 million. The overwhelming majority of these purchases happened on current-gen hardware, with PS5 players driving roughly 93 to 94 percent of the sales across both titles.
These numbers arrive despite a fair amount of community friction at launch. Players pointed out the lack of substantial technical upgrades over the original releases, alongside lingering concerns regarding classic lobby exploits and hacking issues. Yet millions of players voted with their wallets anyway. Alinea analyst Rhys Elliott notes that the primary audience consists largely of 30 to 40-year-old players chasing the exact multiplayer experiences they remember from their younger days, heavily overlapping with active communities in modern Warzone, Fortnite, and EA Sports FC 26.
Financially, the gamble has paid off handsomely for Microsoft. The twin releases pulled in an estimated $435 million in gross sales within weeks, putting the revenue on par with major tentpole platform launches like Forza Horizon 6. For a cross-platform giant like Call of Duty, tapping into historical goodwill proves that players are more than willing to pay for direct access to past favorites, even when the technical execution leaves room for debate.
