Bungie Tackles Marathon Grenade Spam with Major Inventory Nerf

Bungie has released a new update for Marathon that significantly reduces grenade stack sizes to combat the prevailing explosive meta and bring gunfights back to the forefront.

Bungie is taking direct aim at the explosive meta dominating its extraction shooter. According to recent patch notes covered by Eurogamer, the latest update introduces a sweeping reduction to grenade stack sizes across the board. The community has spent weeks voicing frustration over endless explosive exchanges that overshadowed traditional gunfights. By cutting maximum capacities for lethal throwables, the developers are attempting to shift the tactical focus back to actual shooting.

Under the new changes, stack sizes for EMP, flechette, chem, frag, and heat grenades have all been slashed down to a maximum of one. Players will now carry roughly half their previous explosive inventory into matches. Claymores also caught a nerf, dropping to two per stack, while utility items like smoke grenades and proximity sensors remain untouched since they do not directly contribute to the explosive damage loop. Alongside the grenade adjustments, the patch fixes several UI bugs, refines the C.A.R.R.I armoury, and introduces secure vents to Cryo Archive to curb aggressive spawn rushing.

For a game that relies heavily on high-stakes tension and precise combat loops, allowing explosive spam to dictate matches was a clear threat to player retention. While individual grenades remain powerful situational tools, limiting how many a single operator can stockpile changes the rhythm of squad engagements for the better. It is a welcome adjustment that shows the development team is listening to community feedback as the game continues to evolve across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms.
