Bungie Pushes Marathon Beyond Extraction Following Persistent Player Slump

Bungie is overhauling its struggling shooter Marathon by moving beyond pure extraction gameplay, introducing approachable PvE modes, team deathmatch, and friendlier onboarding to win back players.

Bungie is changing direction with Marathon following a noticeable decline in active players, announcing plans to evolve the shooter beyond its initial extraction roots. According to a recent developer update reported by Eurogamer, the studio aims to make the game more approachable by offering varied levels of intensity and commitment. While the core extraction mode will remain intact for hardcore fans, the team is introducing a series of updates designed to broaden the overall player base.

The pivot begins in October with the Nightfall refresh, which introduces free permanent reward passes and sponsored kit queues that let players matchmake with provided gear instead of risking their own inventory. December will bring a bigger push into lower pressure territory via the Symbiosis PvE mode alongside an experimental Team Deathmatch option. These additions address a primary hurdle from launch, where the unforgiving nature of pure extraction gameplay proved too steep for casual players and contributed to dwindling PC numbers.

The major evolution arrives next March with an interconnected ecosystem spanning permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences. Bungie is also overhauling the onboarding process, adding a focused narrative questline, and expanding solo and crew options. By listening to community feedback and lowering the barrier to entry without sacrificing the game's striking art style and distinct world, Bungie hopes to give Marathon a sustainable second act in a crowded live service market.
