Bungie Overhauls Marathon, Drops Seasonal Model and Delays Season 3

Bungie is dropping its seasonal content model for Marathon, delaying Season 3 to December to roll out a major PvE overhaul and economy reset.

Bungie is hitting the reset button on Marathon following a steep drop in momentum since the extraction shooter launched earlier this year. According to Game Rant, the studio has pushed back the scheduled release of Season 3 from September to December 8, where it will relaunch as the major Symbiosis update. This pivot comes as Bungie phases out traditional seasonal content models entirely, joining a growing list of developers trading rigid update roadmaps for flexible development cycles that prioritize deep progression and player feedback over artificial urgency.

The upcoming December update aims to inject much-needed depth into the live-service title by introducing a permanent PvE game mode, a social space equipped with a firing range, an experimental TDM mode, and a refreshed Perimeter map. To bridge the gap, Bungie is rolling out a smaller October update designed to wipe the slate clean for the in-game economy and player progression. This interim patch will also reintroduce the Vault Breaker mode for a limited time and deliver a brand-new reward pass to help ease community frustrations.

This overhaul arrives at a complex time for the studio, which recently wound down support for Destiny 2 to place its full focus on Marathon. With Steam metrics showing Destiny 2 maintaining a significantly larger player base, the pressure is on for Bungie to evolve Marathon into the dynamic survival experience players are asking for. By giving the team extra breathing room to build and test features, Bungie is hoping to salvage the game's long-term retention and prove that the extraction shooter still has a viable future.

Looking ahead, Bungie plans to share more details later this month regarding how Marathon will pivot toward a more alien and dynamic gameplay loop. For a community that treats live-service games as long-term social spaces, this structural shift could be the exact course correction needed to keep players engaged.
