Bungie is overhauling Marathon to expand beyond its extraction shooter roots, introducing permanent PvE modes, progression resets, and new content drops to revive the struggling live-service title.
Bungie is taking a hard look at Marathon and preparing a sweeping series of updates to help the title recover from a sharp post-launch player decline. According to a recent official update reported by Game Rant, the studio plans to push the game beyond its original extraction shooter format. Despite earning positive reviews for its gunplay and art direction back in March 2026, the game has struggled to maintain momentum on platforms like Steam, prompting the team to rethink its rigid live-service approach in favor of broader accessibility.
The upcoming content roadmap kicks off in October with a refresh of the ongoing Nightfall season, which will overhaul player progression tracks, the in-game economy, and reward structures. A much larger shift arrives in December with the Symbiosis update. This patch introduces Marathon's first permanent PvE mode, an experimental Team Deathmatch option, a reworked Perimeter zone, and a new speed-focused shell named Bishop, alongside a revamped social space and improved onboarding.
Looking further ahead to March 2027, Bungie plans to connect PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences even more closely alongside fresh story content and map expansions. This strategic pivot for Marathon coincides with Bungie recalibrating its plans for Destiny 2 as well, reversing course on content vaulting and reaffirming its long-term commitment to both major franchises as it navigates the realities of modern live-service development.
