Bungie is testing a new Duos mode in Marathon

Bungie is launching a limited two-week test for a new two-player Duos mode in Marathon, giving players the smaller squad size they have requested since launch.

Bungie is continuing to lean into community feedback for Marathon by introducing an experimental two-player Duos queue. Originally built as a strict three-player extraction shooter, the title has slowly expanded its playlist options to accommodate different playstyles, following the addition of solo support earlier in development. Game director Joe Ziegler recently shared details about the rollout, noting that the team is going slightly off script to test how the game feels with smaller squads.

The initial test run goes live on Wednesday, March 18, and comes with a few limitations while the team gauges player response. The playlist is restricted to a single map, Perimeter, and will launch without traditional matchmaking, pairing duo teams strictly against other duos. Ziegler openly warned the community that the early build might feel a bit rough around the edges, positioning the two-week test as an iterative workshop rather than a polished feature release.

For a genre where squad sizes dictate the entire rhythm of map control, pacing, and loot economy, adding a dedicated duo option changes everything. If the test proves successful, it could easily become a permanent fixture, giving players more flexibility in how they drop in.
