Bungie has added new Codex challenges for Marathon's upcoming Cryo Archive map, featuring deep-cut Easter eggs and callbacks to the original nineties series for veteran players to uncover.
As the community prepares for the arrival of the Cryo Archive map in Marathon, Bungie has loaded the in-game Codex with new challenges that pack some serious nostalgia for long-time fans. Spotted by Connor Makar over at Eurogamer, the update introduces several demanding tasks that double as deep cuts to the original nineties series, bridging the gap between Bungie's classic shooter roots and its modern extraction shooter evolution.
Among the standout discoveries is the Dedication Syndrome challenge, tucked inside the Vidmaster tab. Players who manage to complete all CyberAcme Cryo Archive limited contracts in a single weekend will unlock an exclusive profile background. This piece of art features a Destroyer holding a cybernetic skull and spine, serving as a brilliant homage to a classic piece of art by Craig Collins from the original games. Other nods include the Colony Ship For Sale, Cheap challenge, which points toward hidden terminal caches, and the returning obsession with the number seven seen in challenges like Drop 7.
Beyond the callbacks, these challenges set the stage for deeper lore exploration and progression when the map and its accompanying ranked mode go live. Players will be hunting down Bernard Strauss journal entries and tracking down AI subroutines seen in pre-launch cinematic trailers to unlock the Cryo Vault. It is a smart way to build pre-launch hype and reward dedicated players with cosmetic bragging rights before they even drop onto the new map.
