Bungie is evolving Marathon beyond a strict extraction shooter by adding dedicated PvE modes, a Team Deathmatch option, and a long-awaited social hub.
Bungie is steering Marathon into a broader live service direction, according to a recent developer update covered by Rock Paper Shotgun. Originally pitched as a ruthless extraction shooter, the game is growing beyond its initial format to include a dedicated PvE mode and a low-commitment Team Deathmatch option. These additions aim to give players different ways to engage with the world without risking a full run every time they queue up.
Alongside these gameplay shifts, the upcoming Bishop shell brings a high-mobility, melee-focused robotic samurai to the roster, while the existing Perimeter zone is receiving a fungus-themed visual overhaul that promises fresh routes and tactical challenges. A brand-new zone is also scheduled to drop in March, giving the community more ground to explore.
Perhaps the most requested addition is a dedicated social hub, also slated for March. Sponsored by CyAc, this space features a built-in firing range where players can group up, test out builds, and compare gear before heading back out. It is a clear push by Bungie to transform Marathon from a niche competitive experience into a wider social ecosystem that can sustain a modern player base over the long haul.
