Bungie Draws a Hard Line Against Cheating in Upcoming Extraction Shooter Marathon

Bungie has announced a zero tolerance, permanent ban policy for cheaters in Marathon, pairing the strict rule with advanced server side security and high performance networking to ensure fair play.
Bungie is taking a zero tolerance approach to security in its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon. In a recent engineering blog post detailing the game's technical framework, developers confirmed that anyone caught cheating will face a permanent ban immediately with no second chances. This swift justice stands in sharp contrast to the tiered penalty systems used by other titles in the space, such as the three strikes policy seen in Arc Raiders. While Bungie has not yet specified whether these bans will extend to hardware IDs or IP addresses, the studio is making it clear that exploiting the game is an immediate ticket out.
The strict anti cheat policy is backed by robust technical safeguards designed to protect the integrity of matches on Tau Ceti IV. Marathon is utilizing BattlEye alongside a server side fog of war mechanic, which helps shut down wall hacks and ESP exploits by hiding item and container locations until players are meant to see them. Engineering director Eamon McKenzie emphasized that deaths in the game should only happen because of hostile environment conditions or poor tactical choices by the player, calling a level playing field a non negotiable requirement for the genre.
Beyond security, the developers outlined quality of life improvements aimed at common multiplayer frustrations. The game features a high performance networking model on dedicated servers designed to prevent frustrating deaths behind cover. Furthermore, if players drop connection mid run, the system supports reconnecting to the same session. If server issues prevent a successful return, players will even recover the gear they brought into the match. Originally reported by Ford James over at Polygon, these technical details show that Bungie is prioritizing fair competition and player trust as Marathon builds toward release.
