Bungie Ditchs Strict Seasons for Marathon, Pushing Major PvE Update to December

Bungie is moving Marathon away from rigid seasonal schedules, delaying major content to a December update called Symbiosis that introduces a permanent PvE mode and system overhauls based on player feedback.

Bungie is shaking up its development roadmap for Marathon, officially dropping the rigid seasonal release schedule in favor of a more flexible approach. According to a recent report by Rock Paper Shotgun, the update originally scheduled for September is now moving to December 8 under the title Symbiosis. The studio notes that this extra runway gives the team the necessary time to build, test, and refine features rather than rushing to meet arbitrary calendar deadlines.

Players have plenty to look forward to when the December update finally lands, starting with a permanent PvE mode that early promotional materials hint might lean into cooperative bug stomping territory. The Symbiosis patch also packs a new Runner shell, a refreshed Perimeter zone, a social space and firing range, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode, and much-needed onboarding upgrades for fresh players. Before that drops, an interim update on October 6 will wipe player progression and reset the in-game economy to clear the slate.

This pivot comes straight on the heels of direct community feedback demanding deeper long-term progression, greater variety, and stronger retention hooks. By stepping away from the treadmill of fixed seasonal drops, Bungie is aiming to deliver meatier content updates that actually stick. For a community treating Marathon as a primary social hub, trading hurried patches for genuine polish is a welcome trade-off.
