Bungie Details Marathon Seasonal Plans and Confirms Mandatory Wipes

Bungie has revealed its seasonal roadmap for Marathon, confirming three-month updates and mandatory wipes for all players alongside new zones, factions, and gear.

As Marathon approaches its launch window following a lengthy delay and recent technical tests, Bungie has outlined the seasonal roadmap for the extraction shooter. According to a developer blog covered by Rock Paper Shotgun, each season will run for roughly three months and bring free updates loaded with new zones, gear, Runner shells, and community events. Bungie is positioning the living universe of Tau Ceti as a reactive space that evolves based on player actions and feedback, leaning hard into the ongoing narrative mystery of the lost New Cascadia Colony.

Unlike extraction shooters that leave seasonal wipes optional, Marathon is committing to a mandatory clean slate for all players at the start of every new season. When a season rolls over, everyone will lose their accumulated gear, overall contract progress, faction ranks, and character levels. Bungie explains that your long term progression comes in the form of raising your power floor and expanding your armory options, meaning recovery from losses and build crafting will become more streamlined over time. Cosmetics that you have earned or purchased, along with your codex progress, will safely carry over from season to season.

The inaugural season, titled Death is the First Step, kicks off a proxy war between rival factions on Tau Ceti and grants access to six factions, six Runner shells, three starting zones, and 28 weapons at launch. As the community progresses, players will eventually unlock a fourth endgame map aboard the abandoned UESC Marathon ship, with a ranked mode arriving later in March. Bungie has also given an early nod to Season 2, which is named Nightfall and will introduce a nighttime variant of the Dire Marsh zone. Shifting away from the permanent loot accumulation seen in games like Destiny 2 is a bold gamble for Bungie, and we will see how the community reacts when the game launches.
