Bungie Delays Marathon's Permanent PvE Mode to December and Ditches Strict Seasons

Bungie is delaying Marathon's permanent PvE mode to December as part of the Symbiosis update and dropping rigid seasonal schedules in favor of flexible development.
Bungie has hit the brakes on Marathon, pushing its major update and long-awaited permanent PvE mode out of September and into a December launch window. Originally slated for September 22, the content is now arriving on December 8 under the title Symbiosis. According to a recent studio update reported by Eurogamer, the pivot aims to give the development team more breathing room to address core player feedback regarding depth, variety, and long-term progression. Marathon has faced an uphill battle since launch when it comes to player retention and growing its community, compounded by significant structural turbulence at the studio earlier this year.
To bridge the gap before the Symbiosis update lands, players will see a smaller patch drop on October 6 that handles a standard progression and economy reset alongside a fresh Rewards Pass and the temporary return of the Vault Breaker mode. More importantly, Bungie is officially abandoning the rigid seasonal content schedule that has defined live service games for years. Moving away from fixed seasonal deadlines gives the team the flexibility to test and refine features properly before they hit the live servers, rather than rushing to meet arbitrary calendar targets.
The upcoming December update packs a serious punch for anyone waiting for more ways to engage with the extraction shooter. Symbiosis will introduce a brand-new Runner shell, the permanent PvE mode, a dedicated social space for testing out gear with friends, onboarding tweaks for new players, a refreshed Perimeter zone, and an experimental team deathmatch mode. For a community that has consistently asked for better reasons to stick around for the long haul, these systemic changes and player-focused additions might be exactly what the game needs to turn the tide.
